Canada Summer Jobs, Art Programming Intern

Terms: This is a full-time, 9-week position starting the week of Jun 27, 2024 - Aug 30, 2024 (for a total of 270 hours, 30 hours/week @$23.00/hr) located in Kjipuktuk/Halifax, NS. Generally, hours will be Tuesday through Saturday and may include evenings.

About Wonder’neath

Wonder'neath Art Society is a visual arts organization and studio facility with a range of community programming and partnerships. The Summer Art Programming Intern will support the delivery of art programming and outreach to engage a variety of participants. The Summer Art Programming Intern should have art-making and art facilitation skills and experience, and an interest or experience in the role of community-engaged arts.

Wonder’neath Art Society is a charitable artist-run organization that encourages and promotes art as a tool for expression, connection and social transformation by bringing professional artists and local residents together in dynamic, creative explorations.

About The Position

Summer Programming Intern Qualifications:

  • Highly creative and innovative

  • Reliable, flexible, adaptable and patient 

  • Strong organizational skills 

  • Dynamic visual art/craft skills

  • Social media and communication skills 

  • Art facilitation experience (comfortable engaging a broad range of people)

  • Able to work both collaboratively and independently

  • Police Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search

In collaboration with the Artistic and Executive Director, the intern's duties will include: 

  • Project planning and scheduling for summer art initiatives and outreach events, including support for our Open Studio program and the Summer Open House

  • Researching and developing project ideas, including creating samples and directions 

  • Animating and facilitating art activities

  • Liaising with community members and community organizations 

  • Developing posters and communicating initiatives through a variety of methods including social media

  • Contributing to overall studio organization.

  • Documenting events/projects/programs, collecting feedback from participants, and participating in program evaluation.

Responsibilities include: 

  • Working as part of a team to create an environment that is welcoming to a broad range of participants

  • Becoming familiar with the Wonder’neath community and its ongoing programming

  • Learning and implementing safe studio practices

  • Monitoring the success of projects and identifying improvements

  • Fostering opportunities for sharing, exchange of ideas/resources and expertise within our studio setting

Eligibility Requirements:

This position is supported through the Canada Summer Jobs program. An individual may be eligible for the position if they:

  • are a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada (non-Canadians holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent status are not eligible);

  • are legally entitled to work in Canada;

  • are between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of employment
